Tiny Bear Distillery
Have you ever wondered what Navy strength actually means? And what’s it got to do with Gin?
Sit down and pour yourself a glass my friend and wonder no longer.
We enter the Royal British Navy, an organisation that liked their gin very boozy indeed. They found that if you mix a ‘Navy’ strength gin, around 57-58% with gunpowder [as you do when you’re stuck on a boat for months on end with very little entertainment] – it still ignites if it has enough alcohol in it. “Proof” it’s good, really. Bit of food for thought while you enjoy this slow sipper.
Easy and simple slow sipper, juniper base, orange, clove and spiced cardamom.
About Tiny Bear Distillery: It all started with a question, "If you could do anything, and money wasn't an issue, what would you do?”. The answer "Open a distillery".
It kind of just made sense. Damian and Amanda always enjoyed the Melbourne Gin scene, with a love of everything craft. From that moment on, they stopped looking for a house to live in, but rather a place to build a distillery. In 2017, they settled on a place (it was being constructed), a name and an agreement to put it all on the line. It took until June 2018 to open and since that day Damian and Amanda live by one motto. Try and make the gin better every day!
They pride themselves on doing absolutely everything themselves. Tiny Bear Distillery makes its own base spirit from a wine made with kale, sugar, water and yeast. They then distil the wine into vodka by running it through their 6 Plate Australian Built copper column, and then turn this vodka into their core range of gins as well as a few experimental ideas.
